Volunteering

Build the Foundation with us

Our approach to volunteering

We do not see volunteering as a cost-cutting stopgap but as a founding choice. Together, we are building an institution that will transform the Belgian social landscape for good, and we need committed hearts more than paid hands.

Our commitment to you is clear:

We refuse to take advantage of anyone’s generosity. Your time is precious, your expertise has value, and your commitment deserves recognition. That is why we pledge to:

  • Strictly respect your availability – We will never ask for more than you can give
  • Recognise your contribution – Certificates, references, accredited training: your CV will grow richer
  • Give our volunteers priority for future positions – Those who build with us from the start will be first in line
  • Offer compensation as soon as possible – First reimbursement of expenses, then statutory volunteer allowances, and finally full salaries

Our vision of mutual commitment

These roles are crucial to our mission. We fully understand that this is voluntary work and we deeply respect your generosity. Our approach to commitment rests on two core principles:

  1. Commitment must be reasonable – Better to promise 2 hrs a week and keep to it than aim for 15 hrs that cannot be sustained
  2. Commitment must be honoured – Barring circumstances beyond your control (illness, exams, family emergencies), we count on your reliability

You are best placed to decide how much time you can give.

Whether you can give 1 hour or 10 hours a week, we will adapt. However, to ensure the continuity of our services, we ask for a minimum commitment depending on the role:

  • Operational roles (Social Worker, Communications Manager): minimum 2 hrs a week
  • Technical roles (Developer, Community Manager): minimum 1 hr a week
  • Field roles (Coordinator): minimum 2 hrs a week
  • Support roles (Admin/Finance, Compliance): minimum 2 hrs a week

Flexibility guaranteed: A student in exam season? A parent with family commitments? A professional with busy periods? We understand and we adapt. What matters is communication and reliability over the long term.

Our ethical approach to funding:

Although “those who work on Zakat” (al-‘amilina ‘alayha) are among the 8 legitimate categories of beneficiaries according to the Quran, and the fuqaha generally allow up to 12.5% of the Zakat collected for operating costs, we have made the ethical choice to keep this use to an absolute minimum.

Our vision: to cover our running costs primarily with general donations (sadaqat) and, if we must use Zakat for salaries, to limit it to a maximum of 10% – well below what Sharia permits. Every euro saved on running costs is an extra euro for families in need.

Our long-term vision:

As soon as possible (target: 2027), we will gradually turn key volunteer roles into paid jobs, funded primarily by donations towards our running costs and secondarily by the minimum share of Zakat permitted. You are not volunteers for ever, but the co-founders of an institution with a future.

A pact of mutual trust:

Joining our volunteer team means becoming a pioneer of a model that is unique in Belgium. Together, we are proving that Islamic solidarity can be professionalised while maximising the impact for beneficiaries. Your sacrifice today builds the social justice of tomorrow.

“The best of you are those who are most beneficial to others” – Your volunteering is an investment in the hereafter and in the future of our community.
